“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future.” – Maria Montessori

Things are buzzing here at Green School!  Kids are learning about nature through their senses in Green Studies, making plant perfume & getting into the mud this week!  Classes are humming with activity, Marimba music floating through the air, art students making self portraits with found objects & so much more. The “Yoga for Kids” Teacher Training in Bali course was a wonderful  success, Soccer season kicked off with bang & the Back-to-School Picnic was a big hit too!  Thanks to everyone for helping get this new school year off to such a great start  . .  Go Green School Go!

Annual Meeting

Green-School-Board

We will be holding our first Annual Meeting after assembly at 3.30pm on Friday the 27th of September. This will be where teachers, staff and families can hear the future vision and plans for Green School. It will include what the Board and management envisage for Green School in the next one, five and ten years time. There will be an open discussion and an opportunity to ask questions and contribute your own vision and ideas for the future of our school. I encourage all staff, faculty and families to attend.

Roger James Hamilton
Board Chairman

Green School Vision, Mission and Values

What follows are important guiding principal for Green School and we live by them each day, from the students to the staff to the community. They are what shape our daily and yearly focus. They are available publicly for everyone in the Annual Plan (2013/14 Plan coming soon!), on our website, and in our literature, but it is nice to pull them out and review them with everyone.

Christopher Thompson
Director and General Manager

Our Vision
Our vision is of a natural, holistic,student-centered learning environment that empowers and inspires our students to be creative, innovative, green leaders.

Our Mission
The Mission of Green School contributes to our Vision by educating young leaders in global citizenship. Our purpose is to champion a new model of learning that connects the timeless lessons from nature to a relevant and effective preparation for a fast-changing future.

Our Values
We believe in three simple rules underlying every decision: be local; let your environment be your guide; and envisage how your grandchildren will be affected by your actions. The eight Green School iRespect Values that guide us are: Integrity; Responsibility; Empathy; Sustainability; Peace; Equality; Community; Trust.

Green School Community Association Gathering Steam

FootsThank you to all of you that have expressed interest in supporting GSCA parent-led projects.  We have received a good number of enthusiastic responses to our service commitment survey and several parents have proposed their own projects of passion that they are wanting to initiate this year.

There are still a good number of you, though, that have yet to indicate how you’d like to be involved as a parent at Green School this year.  We would like to ask that you complete our quick online service survey here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5GTRRJF

We expect to begin bringing teams together to start working on their respective projects next week after we have collected more responses from parents.  We are growing in number and it’s exciting to think of what we can accomplish together for our vibrant and growing Green School community!

Kul Kul Connecting in 2013-2014

Kul Kul

Kul Kul Connection has big plans for building bridges between the Sibang and Green School communities this year.

We are greatly encouraged by the support received from the Green School Global team to allocate a portion of the proceeds from Green Educator workshops to our free English program for students from the local village of Sibang.  Pak Soma managed to enrol over 90 students for this program in just a few days in July. Classes are set to begin on Monday, September 9th, so you might soon see local Sibang students eager to learn English at Green School coming onto our campus after school on weekdays.
Also exciting is the number of parents who have expressed an intention to support Kul Kul Connection endeavours and activities this year either through service or simply participating in our events.  We are eager to get you involved and we will be contacting you next week with an announcement of our first meeting time.  Until then, here is a list of some of the KKC’s proposed and/or ongoing projects to give you an idea of what’s in store this year:

  • Free English classes after school from Monday-Friday for local Sibang students.
  • Free English classes for GS staff/scholar parents/local school teachers
  • Race to 300 (Indonesian language learning through vocabulary acquisition and language exchange for GS parents/faculty/staff/students)
  • Social events that bring together international and Indonesian Green School parents
  • Regularly scheduled tours to introduce international parents to our neighbouring Sibang community and its citizens
  • Involvement in community projects such as waste management
  • Quarterly meetings with Sibang community leaders
  • Connecting Sibang students to Green School students through play and service  (sports/games/after-school activities)
  • Fundraiser for school gamelan acquisition
  • KKC to act as a liaison/gatekeeper between GS faculty wishing to engage in community connections and the Sibang community

If you’re looking to connect with the KKC, please send me an email to indicate your interest and I’ll be sure to include you on our mailing list.

Admissions Update: Enrolment for January 2014 Semester

Sergey-Found-Object

While 2014 may still seem like a long way off, we are already seeing a steady stream of inquiries and applications for the upcoming January-June semester.  Given some of our classes are either at or reaching capacity, we will need to hear from you if your plans for re-enrolment in January have changed.

Green School families who have already indicated an intention to enrol for the August-December 2013 semester only have received a January 2014 enrolment confirmation request this week via email.

If your family had intended to enrol for the full 2013-2014 academic year or longer at the time of registration, but have since decided to leave Green School at the end of this semester, we need to hear from you soon. Unless Admissions is informed otherwise, deposits are held against the full enrolment period committed to at the time of registration.

Please come and speak to us in Admissions should you require any clarification.

We hope to see you all back, learning and growing with us at Green School in 2014!

Tim Fijal, Admissions

Yoga for Kids Teacher Training in Bali

yogaIn August, Green Camp hosted its first ever Yoga for Kids Teacher Training program.
Organized by Green School parent, Claudia Perucchini, and supported by teachers from  Yellow Coco, the 12-day program was a great success!

The program focused on empathy & resolution techniques were imparted around common issues in the education of young children, such as bullying & sharing.  Learning the art of teaching traditional yoga poses to kids, breathing, mindfulness, and some creative group poses made the whole experience a huge success. Of course, no Green Camp is ever complete without a healthy dose of fun in the mud pit, swimming in the Ayung River, and learning permaculture principles. You can read more about it here: http://www.liveloveraw.com/

From the Mailbox

green-school“Dear Green School,

At Dr. Owen Geiger’s green building blog  he mentioned your school and left your name for others to see your site. I believe in what you are doing there to help children grow to be fine adults.  My thanks for being loving, responsible people who really do care about the children and your environment.  You have my utmost respect.  My only regret is that I didn’t start life out in such an environment.  My suggestion is to watch what these children become.  From their teens into adulthood.  I believe you are grooming leaders.  Everyone will benefit from the sound direction that they learned at your school…
Much Respect And Gratitude To You And All The Other Instructors

Ramon Schagen (New Zealand), Fiona de Souza (Singapore),
Tiera, age 10 (Grade 6),  and Declan age 8 (Grade 3B)

The de Souza – Schagen Family is new to Green School this year from Singapore.  They first came to do a trial day at the school three years ago, but it took them awhile to take the leap.  They are a very diverse family with Ramon being half Dutch and New Zealander, and Fiona being half Chinese and half Portugese, so they are happy to add Bali to their long list of cultural experiences.  They are living in Pererenan near the beach north of Changgu, and Ramon who is a keen mountain bike rider and the kids are determined to learn to surf this year.  Tiera has built an amazing eco website for other kids called kidsgreenliving.com (see picture below) and hopes to add exciting new content about her experiences in Bali to the site. She likes the water, creating home videos and doing instagram and her brother Declan loves soccer and playing Minecraft on the computer.  Fiona, a catholic, was delighted to find a number of catholic churches in Bali and she is interested in Permaculture and herbs.  The de Souza-Schagen family even has their own Green Mission Statement and it is a big  RRRRRA!!! Raising Men, a Rite of Passage for boys

Raising-Men-CampFollowing up on last week’s feature on Camp Out with Kids, for 6 – 11 year olds, please see the flyer for Raising Men, a Rite of Passage camp for fathers / mentors and boys aged 12 – 15 years. This will be held in a beautiful location in Bedugal, Bali, from Friday October 18th to Monday 21st, at the start of the mid-term break. Says Naren King “I have been planning to do this adventure with Toby ever since he was 8 years old, and I’m really excited it’s going to happen here in Bali. I have known Dr Arne Rubinstein and his work with rites of passage for teenagers, for almost 20 years. Many of my friends have been on one of these camps and all have reported that its been one of the best things, or the best thing, they have ever done with their son. We have an opportunity here in Bali for the first time, to support the transition of boys, to young men, through this unique program, and I encourage all fathers of boys from 12 – 15 years to come and share this experience. For more info and registering, you can go to: http://doctorarne.com/raising-men-camp-bali/

Dr Arne Rubinstein (author of ‘The Making of Men’) gave a great talk at Green School earlier this year.  Arne is one of the founders of Pathways Foundation, which runs successful Rites of Passage programs throughout Australia, for youth approaching adulthood. Arne said; “teenagers today have more opportunities than ever, but also face more challenges.”  The engaging discussion that followed covered practical ways to guide and support young adults in this most critical time in their lives and led to Arne being invited back to run some programs here in Bali.

Global Rites of Passage- Leadership Training

Leadership-TrainingAnother really exciting program that is happening here in Bali, is the Global Rites of Passage Leadership Training, from Friday October 4th – Sunday 6th. Arne will be outlining the elements of Rites of Passage that are used all over the world and that we can use to create programs to support not only our youth but also in our families, communities and work. Arne has been working with teenagers, families and corporate leaders for over 30 years. Over 20,000 people have attended his programs internationally and he was nominated for Australian of the Year in 2008. This is the first time he has run a program in Bali and it is an amazing opportunity. More details go to : http://doctorarne.com/leadership-training-bali/
