Letter from the Board
Resignation of the Chairman of the Board of Green School
Roger Hamilton recently resigned from Chairmanship and from the Board of Green School. The plan had been that he would hand over Chairmanship by January of next year – in fact, he had tried to do that some six months ago, but the Board did not want to lose his leadership and so persuaded him to stay on. However, in response to recent events, Roger decided that he could not wait any longer. He also resigned as Director of the Global team.
Follows an extract of the letter that was sent to Roger in acknowledging his resignation and his huge contribution to the school over the past two-and-a-half years:
On behalf of the Green School Community, may I say a huge thank you for your service on the School Board since the Board’s inception at the beginning of 2011.
You have dedicated significant amounts of time and effort in contributing to stabilising Green School and making it the vibrant community that it is today.
On behalf of the Board, may I pay tribute to the leadership that you have provided to us since taking over as Chairman in mid-2011. You have been a relentless driver who has set the tone and the expectation for your followership, and have been the major factor in taking the school successfully through to seeing the first graduates in mid-2013.
Your dedication to duty and service is commendable, and you have set an extremely high bar for us.
Your resignation from Chairmanship and from the Board is reluctantly acknowledged effective 30th September 2013.
We wish you well in your other pursuits and hope that you and your family will in time remember the good parts of your association with this pioneering project in education.
Following the AGM of the Board of Green School
The Board would like to express appreciation to all those members of the community who attended the recent AGM.
Further to that meeting, and pursuant to the commitment given at the meeting, the Board is now taking time to consider its governance structure and to research other models that are working well in order to come up with the best model for Green School.
Following the resignation of Roger Hamilton from the position of Chairman of the Board of Green School, the Board has appointed Ronald Stones OBE to the position of Interim Chairman. Ron is Former Director of Green School and has been a member of the Board since its inception in 2011. He is a part-time resident of Bali.

Green School attends Global Issues Network Bali Conference
30 Green School students attended the Global Issues Network Bali Conference at Canggu Community School last weekend. They were treated to an action-packed Saturday that saw groups heading to locations all over south Bali to analyze marine debris, learn about the importance of protecting our mangrove forests, and meet a professional mermaid who works to protect marine life, among many other activities.
Saturday night featured a BBQ and a concert with Green School’s own Nasi Campur and local rockers Deep Sea Explorers and Navicula. With the help of the students, Navicula shot a short video to help in Greenpeace’s campaign to free the “Artic 30″, who have been jailed while raising awareness about Arctic oil drilling.
Sunday was a smorgasbord of guest speakers including an escape artist who works to alleviate poverty all over the world, a skateboarder who skates across countries to raise money to fight cancer, recent Bali International School graduates who started their own NGO to help clean Bali, and the aforementioned mermaid, all of whom spoke to the importance of using your passions to work toward a better future for all.
A major highlight of the weekend was Green School’s own Isabel and Melati Wijsen debuting their ambitious campaign to gather one million signatures and present them to the governor of Bali asking him to sign a law outlawing plastic bags on the island.
When asked for their most valuable take aways from the weekend, the most common answer from students was “That we can use our passions to help make a difference in the world”.

Green School Family Snapshot

Rama (Grade 4) and OMang (Starlings) at the temple with a friend.
Green School parent ZanZan has worked as an hotelier for a long time, first at Hilton for about 6 and half years, than with the Ritz Carlton for 4 and half years and after that spent about 11 years in Ubud starting with Pertiwi Resort & Spa and than ARMA Museum and Resort, then finally with Five Elements and after a total of 21 years he decided to go back to the village to become a farmer again. He is also working together and creating a concept with a community in North Bali that they are calling OMUNITYBALI, an eco-homestay, with all organic foods, that lets people experience going back to a natural way of life with the Balinese people. OMunity is available for special retreats and weekend outings for classes as well. You can read more about it at: www.omunitybali.com ZanZan’s wife, Putu Shelly, is supporting the local artisans in her village by helping to promote and sell their gorgeous hand-made silk scarves, (interested parents may email her directly at parwati33@gmail.com) as well as taking care of their three children.
ZanZan says,
“Om swastyastu, So there is long story about why I decided to take Rama, our first son to be at Green School. The short answer is because I can clearly understand the vision and the mission of Green School itself which is ” would like to create a green leader in the future in their own generation.” We do really want that one day, for Rama and his brother OMang to become a great leaders in their own future generation. Now I am still waiting for our second daughter to be with Green School as well, next January. One of the reasons i am very interested to be at Green School is the concept of bringing people from all over the world to be in Bali and at the same time be able to give a chance for the locals to be part of the Scholarship Program.
Namaste, Zanzan“
