What an exciting Halloween week with a HUGE orange pumpkin on campus, children all dressed in zany costumes, ‘trick-or-treating’, a parade, a dance party, and a costume contest too! Big thanks to the High School students for organizing so much of this Halloween fun for the enjoyment of us all! The huge orange pumpkin turned out to be an inflatable movie theater (designed by John Hardy & friends) for Wednesday night’s screening of the spectacular film, Samsara!
Green School classes start new thematic units this week, with topics like: Indonesian Animals, Litter Monster, Roller Coaster Building, Happiness, Proliferating People, and more. In an effort to protect more trees, save Orangutans & use less resources in general, we’re making a schoolwide effort to cut down on paper use and switching over to recycled paper this week!
*Also please keep in mind that Public Tours now begin at 4pm starting on Monday the 4th*

Rachel Glitz: New Head of Development and Fundraising
We are very happy to announce our new Head of Development and Fundraising, Rachel Glitz.
Rachel never actually planned on a life in Bali. Born and raised in Santa Monica, California, she went to University in Boston (with a year in London) and a stint in Washington, D.C. working in U.S. government and politics before returning to California. She had been practicing law in San Francisco for over ten years for clients in the healthcare industry and the nonprofit sector when her husband, Michael, received an opportunity to conduct research in Indonesia. In the fall of 2011, Rachel moved here with her family (Annabel, now Grade 5 and Charlie, Grade 2A) for a ten month sabbatical… or so she thought. ‘Resisting’ the lure of a return to corporate law, Rachel fell for Green School and the GS community in a big way. After devoting much energy to developing the scholarship policy, something close to her heart, Rachel is excited to join the staff as the development manager to raise funds for that program, among other school fundraising needs.
We are very excited about having Rachel as part of the Green School team. She welcomes your thoughts and ideas about fundraising and development. Rachel is also looking for volunteers for our upcoming Bamboopalooza fundraiser and community building event on December 6. Please feel free to connect with her at rachel.glitz@greenschool.org
Spare Change for Big Change
Grade 1 will be collecting spare change (coins) to support the Dr. Ating Foundation. Many of us may know that we often can’t be bothered with the small change in coins we receive and often end up with a jar full of them. Grade 1 will be kindly requesting any unwanted coins to support the Dr. Ating Foundantion. Dr. Ating has worked in many areas of Indonesia over his lifetime and is now focused on helping the people, plants, and animals of Sulawesi. The Lore Lindu National Park is home to the tiny tarsier and many other endangered animals. Please help to support the Dr. Ating Foundation and his efforts to protect the parks inhabitants by donating any unwanted change. We will be collecting until Friday November 8th. Grade 1 has made some coin collection boxes, but feel free to send coins in jars, re-used bags, or any other container. Thank you very much.
Grade 1
P.S. To read about some of the amazing things that Dr. Ating has done over the years, and to learn more about his foundation, see Dr. Ating’s blog here:

Seeking hosts and buddies for new Green School families:
New Students will be arriving in January. We need families that are willing to be their buddies. It is nice to have contact with a family to ask questions about living in Bali and Green School. Also it is nice to get together with the family at least once so that each child has a friendly face in the classroom on the first day of school. If you are interested in this please contact me at slavinfrasher@yahoo.com.
Thanks, Michelle Frasher

Scholarship Winner receives kudos from US Senator
Kashius Ford, the Grade 5 student who won a “Greenest Student on Earth” scholarship earlier this year, was the subject of an editorial in the Albuquerque Journal and received a warm personal letter from New Mexico Senator Tom Udall.
Excerpt from the Albuquerque Journal: “In a day and age filled with criticism of our youths and our education system, and a time filled with dire climate change warnings, it is heartening that there are students like Kashius Ford eager to counter the former and address the latter. . . and that they can come from anywhere, even a tiny community in southern New Mexico.” (Link to full article: http://goo.gl/CQaUpV)
Excerpt from US Senator’s Letter: “It’s encouraging to see a student who is dedicated to protecting the environment. People of all ages can truly make a difference in reducing our impact on the planet. Your passion for sustainability and desire to help create solutions for our ecological concerns is very impressive. I am proud to have you represent New Mexico in Indonesia as you continue your studies at the Green School.” Link to full letter follows: http://goo.gl/wVXIXe )

Green School Family Snapshot

Alexandra and Pavel Sashurina
Daughter: Alina (3A)
Just a year and a half ago Alexandra was managing her own business in Moscow, working long hours every day of the week. Then things changed: Alexandra sold the business and opened a door to a way of life that was totally different from the one she had been living before.
Alexandra says about her family’s recent life transformation:
“I understood that life can be beautiful without taking part in a constant run for money and success. I started to practice yoga and revised my nutrition, becoming vegetarian. Soon I realized that Moscow lacks vegetarian restaurants as well as the shops where one can buy organic products. Moreover, there were very few mass media talking about more healthy (and happy) way of life.
I noticed that the number of Russian people having the desire to live more consciously is growing. More and more people start thinking how to live green. For these people I and my partners have opened a website www.risomusoreh.ru. It grew and became a company that now not just does the online media but also organizes yoga and health tours all over the world, seminars and master-classes on the topic.
It happened when I went with one of the yoga tours to Bali where I heard about the Green School. I was impressed and felt that this is the place I should know better.
It was my idea to go to Bali but my family approved it with enthusiasm. It was a challenge for us to bring Alina to Green School. We wanted her to understand how is it to live close to the nature, to take care of the place where you live and to think green. For myself Bali and Ubud became the place where I could learn much more about the green way of life that I could know in Russia.
When we go back to Moscow we will bring back, not just our inspiration from observing how people from different nations follow their beliefs for living more consciously, but also knowledge of which changes could be implemented in Russia so that people can keep to more healthy way of life.
We hope that Green School will be better presented in our country, so that more and more Russian children could go here (for Green Camp at least) and learn from childhood how to take care of the place where we live and about ourselves.“
Photography Retreat with Sebastian “Suki” Belaustegui
Green School Parent Sebastian “Suki” Belaustegui is offering his fourth photography retreat and workshop in Bali. This unique opportunity will take place at the beautiful Atas Awan Eco Villa “Above the Clouds” in Bedugul.
“We will have the honor of living 3 days in one of the purest regions of Bali where traditional life is still preserved as a relic of humanity. If you want to learn the art of portraying from the heart with respect to the subject, this is a great opportunity. No need to have photography experience!! “
For more information on the workshop agenda, please write to tallersuki@gmail.com. Space is limited.

Storytelling Class at Yellow Coco
Storytelling Through Song, Story, Image, Local Environmental Connection, Music and Movement
Sun., Nov. 10, 9:30am-12:30pm
This workshop will cover an integrated arts approach to teaching through storytelling for children (from early years to teens).
Why is this important ? This approach allows for a multiple modality connection to a theme, idea, area of interest or specific teaching goal into the world of children from many different access points. Children, teens, and adults relate to and connect to stories, images, movement and song in a way that engages the imagination (the participation of the whole body). Each learner will connect in different ways to learning and building their abilities – storytelling allows for the breadth of connection to happen. In many formal school settings, the art of oral storytelling doesn’t exist – storytelling is confined to reading aloud from a book. By identifying and bringing local stories and images into the learning process, the teachers themselves become creators and the source of the contextualization of what they are teaching – deepening and strengthening the teacher’s presence and vibration as a role model. Bring along a theme, an idea, or a curriculum goal and let’s create a way to connect through storytelling!
The following will be covered:
- Creation of a visual symbol that is directly connected to the local environment and operates as a stimuli for story, play, music and movement. Participants will begin to create their own symbol/image to match the local area they are teaching in.
- The basics of storytelling – a basic introduction to storytelling technique and it’s use in teaching and learning.
- A basic sharing of ways to incorporate movement, song and music into storytelling.
- An understanding of developmental stages, differences in learning styles, and reading readiness in connection to the appropriateness of a whole body approach.
- Memory techniques to bring story into your body and mind so that you can share without text.
Languages of Instruction – Indonesian and English
