“We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our children for the future.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt
Green School rang in a new year (and term) this week with many fresh & happy faces. Students are settling into classes and beginning new thematic units, ranging from “Coconuts” in Kindergarten to “The UN’s Millenium Development Goals” in Grade 8. During lunch break on Wednesday, we were graced by the mesmerizing music of “Bambu Abah Olot”, an all Bamboo instrument ensemble from West Java (click here for a snippet of that toe-tapping performance). In this newsletter be sure to read about After School Activities, a message from our new Head of School & one from our new Chairman of the Board of Directors also.

Letter from our New Head of School
Starting at a new school is a time of transition and emotion. I come to Green School with great enthusiasm, some trepidation and a desire to share my 20 years of experience with our community. I am inspired by the vision, and I sincerely believe the world needs more progressive models of education. Globally, schools are becoming much too similar, focusing on test results with a narrow belief standardization is the dipstick for checking excellence and the pathway to success. It isn’t.
From my experience, more schools have a “McDonald’s factor” – where you can walk into a school and find the same factory processed teaching and learning. The issue I have with standardization is we lose the individual; we lose culture; we lose uniqueness. I have always held on to the belief it is the people who are different who make a difference. Differences are important.
- There is a difference between a teacher and a coach.
- There is a difference between a learner and a performer.
- There is a difference between a leader and a follower.
As I mentioned in my welcoming speech to new families (my own family included) Green School is an incredible place. Reflect that only five-and-a-half years ago there was nothing here but nature. There truly is no other school like this on Earth – and expand this to universe!
We all agree, this is a school that makes a difference.
Like any toddler Green School has grown past the teething stage. We are now not only standing tall globally but we are walking upright, too. Now is the time for us to grow in confidence with our academic and eco-friendly programs, while holding true to the core principles that drove our founders, pioneer students, staff and parents to establish this remarkable community. The foundation for our future success is forged on the positive relationships we share with each other, focusing on the remarkable growth of our children’s wisdom as they venture from K-12.
One of my dreams for Green School is to develop truly for each student a personalized learning program. I believe in capturing the students’ voice and developing the attitudes that define strength of character: confidence, openness, resilience, excellence, passion, patience, positivity, and persistence.
My view is quite simplistic – because I believe in keeping things simple:
- Aim to have learners flourish (cognitively, emotionally, socially, physically, creatively and culturally)
- Strive to nurture nature.
- Share to ensure our community improves communities.
- Hope for our children to find callings – not jobs.
Wisdom comes from many sources. Walking along the beach with my family at Canggu, I noticed the following graffiti:
Watch your thoughts, for your thoughts become your actions.
Watch your actions, for your actions become your habits.
Watch your habits, for your habits become your character,
And your character determines your destiny.
I look forward to establishing the relationships over time based on the trust, the understanding and the unity that will allow this school’s character, and vision, to realise its potential.
Yours sincerely,
John Stewart
Head of School
Letter from our new Chairman of the Board
Dear Green School Community,
Last month you should have received a message from the Founders of Green School informing you of a change to the governance of the school.
My colleague directors and I are pleased to accept the invitation of the Founders through Yayasan Kul-Kul to form a new Board of Directors, and I am delighted to be appointed its Chairman.
For your reference and information, I am attaching biographies of the members of the Board. You will see that we bring a broad range of skills and experience which I believe will contribute to the sustainability, development and growth of Green School.
The school has come a long way over the past five years. It is the Board’s responsibility in developing the school that we remain true to the vision set by its Founders.
I am especially pleased to welcome the appointment of John Stewart as Head of School. John brings a breadth of experience to this position and is passionate about sustainability.
The Board looks forward to working with John as the bridge between the community and the governance of the school. John will direct all aspects of Green School with both Chris Thompson as General Manager and Andy Slavin as Principal reporting to him.
We remain grateful for the community support which has enabled the School’s development to date. We look forward to even greater things for Green School with John at the helm.
All best wishes for the New Year.
Yours sincerely
Dennis Heffernan
Chairman of the Board of Directors of Green School.

Enrollment Commitment for Next School Term
Dear Green School Families,
While August 2014 may still seem like a long way off, in Admissions we are seeing a steady stream of inquiries and applications for the upcoming school year. Given several of our classes are either at or reaching capacity, we will need to secure your commitment to return for the 2014-2015 academic year.
In order to indicate your commitment for next year, please complete this short and simple online form: http://goo.gl/EC4kz
We would encourage you to respond as soon as possible to secure positions for next year, but the deadline for a response is January 31st, 2014. By committing to enroll your child(ren) for the 2014-2015 school year, your existing US$1,000 deposit (per student) will be held as security for that enrolment period. This deposit will be kept by Green School if you decide not to enrol your child after having made the commitment to do so for the 2014-2015 school year. If we have not received your commitment by January 31st, we will open enrolment to new students currently inquiring, applying or on waiting lists.
Please come and speak to us in Admissions should you require any clarification.
We hope to see you all back, learning and growing with us at Green School next August!
Tim and Ami,
Green School Admissions.
From the First Aid Clinic
A hearty welcome to our new families and a big welcome back for returning families to Semester 2 from the Nurse’s office at Green School. Hoping that you have all had happy and healthy holidays and are feeling fit for all the excitement coming your way this semester.
Since the end of the last semester the rainy season, or musim hujan, has well and truly come upon us. With the rains arriving, a wild proliferation of plants and greenery abound and with the rain also comes more insects. T’is the season to take the opportunity to educate yourself and develop more awareness about mosquitoes, those pesky little biters, and the diseases that they spread such as dengue fever and chikungunya.
As with any disease, your best defense against any health issue is maintaining your immune system with proper diet and rest. Mosquito nets are a fabulous investment for a good night’s sleep as well as good quality mosquito repellent. Many types are available here in Bali, including some excellent natural repellents – always remember to reapply regularly throughout the day. For 10 tips on controlling mosquitoes in and around your home, click, click here.

Wishing you all a healthy 2014!

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Club
Green School’s Grade 1 has been spreading the word about and fundraising for the Dr. Ating Foundation. The first graders at school originally knew Dr Ating as our much beloved school doctor. When he decided to leave Green School for his calling, they knew they wanted to help. The students were very excited and willing to help after seeing a slideshow about the Lore Lindu National Park in Sulawesi. The tiny monkey, the tarsier, really caught their attention. The students were also enthralled by the many beautiful birds, insects, and other animals inhabiting the lush forest.
Dr. Ating’s dream is to spend the rest of his life taking care of the tropical rainforest, home of millions of species of plants and animals. Based on his many years working with the jungle people in Papua and Borneo, he believes that the only way to save effectively the wildlife is by helping the poor living around the forest. He has started providing medical service to the poor around the park and hopes, in return for this service, these people will help him to protect the forest from the greed of our fellow human beings.
Through poster making, popcorn sales and bake sales, the Grade 1 students have begun to spread the word about Dr. Ating’s beautiful dream. With the help of others determined to assist Dr. Ating, these small “roots and shoots” have begun to reach as far as Jakarta, Australia, Canada and Europe. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program is now taking off at the Green School school.

Green School Carbon Commuter Footprint
The Results are in! Thank you everyone for participating in the Green School Commuter survey last month. The students in Ibu Andrea’s Environmental Science “Carbon in Carbon out: What’s that Carbon All About?” in collaboration with Thierry from the B.U.G.S (Bus from Ubud to Green School) created, collected, and calculated the data from that survey. The results are in; students: Alex Baur, Dylan Terry, Imogen Fairs, and India Mercer, compiled and tallied the data from 135 responses, as well as proposed solutions to lowering our commuter impact. Here are some of their results:
- The average commuter distance to and from Green School is 31.5 km per day.
- Each year at Green School, we collectively emit 112.12 Metric Tons of carbon solely from commuting.
- On average, there are 72 cars and 32 motorbikes used for commuting every day by teachers and students, which means we are averaging 4.5 people per car.
How can we contribute to reduce our carbon footprint? the class proposed solutions for offsetting or create a carbon positive commuter community, these are:
- Growing and selling spirulina on school grounds or off site to offset carbon.
- The use of Biochar for local carbon sequestration.
- Planting and growing bamboo seedlings, in and around campus, and off site.
- Coordinating a better and more efficient online carpool system for new parents and students.
Car Sharing to Green School

*Results from survey sent Green School community. Accurate as of November 2013. The results obtained are all accurate according to the Commuting survey which was sent out to the community. The survey ONLY accounts for teaching staff and students. Not all community members are accounted for, the result was not changed to account for these missing figures.
The students added that for future studies they would like to get the results of all students, parents, and faculty, as well as calculating household consumption, flights and other main carbon emitters, in the hope that we will one day be able to offset them.
To sign your child up for B.U.G.S (Bus from Ubud to Green School) contact Thierry at amatthierry@gmail.com. Look for the notice about online carpooling soon!

Green School Family Snapshot
Green School Interviews Asher Yaron about family & F.R.E.A.K Coffee
GS: Where did you live before you came to Bali?
AY: Before moving to Bali full-time we were living in a pristine community in southern Oregon called the Little Applegate Valley. We were surrounded by organic farms and a strong supportive community in which we created and developed our passions for Raw Food (which became Avara’s creation here in the “Living Food Lab”), and fresh roasted coffee.
GS: How did you decide to move here?
AY: We went from living in one paradise, in southern Oregon, to living in this one.
The decision to move here was made from a combination of circumstances. We had been coming to Bali many times since 1997 and came here in 2010 after not being here for a couple of years. We were amazed and delighted to see that yoga, raw food, the Green School, and the consciousness of the people Bali was now attracting had changed dramatically and was in sync with our own desires and evolution. We had always wanted to spend more time here and a tour of the school by Ben Macrory made a huge impact. After a bike ride with Michelle Frasher and an invite to her daughter Kaila’s birthday party where we met the Green School parents and community, we had no doubts. 6 months later, in the fall of 2010, we came here for good and never looked back!
GS: Tell us a bit about your daughter and your experience as a Green School Parent?
AY: My daughter Sofia is 9 years old and is in the 4th grade. This is her 4th year at the school. She is very happy here and is becoming more confident as her talents and abilities are nurtured and encouraged. Green School’s support and emphasis on the arts has been particularly good for her because she thrives in those areas, art, music, dance.
GS: Asher….So itʼs been 3 years since you first came to Green School and started F.R.E.A.K. Coffee ….. What can you tell us about your journey so far?
AY: I came to Bali with the intention of creating a fresh roasted coffee business similar to
one I had created in the US, called “Wake-Up!”. So I already had years of experience
creating great coffee with a green, sustainable, and local business model. What I didnʼt know is that I would start F.R.E.A.K. here at the Green School. Before the Living Food Lab and F.R.E.A.K. Cafe existed there was only the Warung which, at the time, was serving the traditional Bali Kopi. Soon after I arrived in Bali I volunteered to help the Warung make better coffee…..and over the next few months, step-by-step, F.R.E.A.K. was born. The support and positive response from the Green School community, including teachers, parents, staff, students, and visitors, was really amazing and helped bring F.R.E.A.K. to where it is today.
GS: Can you give us an update about how far F.R.E.A.K. has come?
AY: I am extremely pleased at how far we have come in just 3 years. We have
established a brand that is well known for its excellent quality and unique products,
while simultaneously doing business in an unprecedented green and sustainable way.
We only use coffee that is grown locally, in Kintamani, is organic and 100% Arabica. All
of the coffee we serve in our Cafeʼs (we currently have 3 other locations in and around
Ubud) is roasted within 24 hours and we have ZERO waste. Our cold pressed coffee is
bottled using recycled honey bottles that we source from the Green School Warung.
We have also been expanding our wholesale business by supplying restaurants, chefs,
resorts, and catering companies with our fresh roasted coffee beans as well as our
bottled cold pressed coffee. We have been profitable from the very start and have built a great business foundation that has made it easy to expand and service new markets.
GS: That’s amazing! What are your future plans for F.R.E.A.K.?
AY: I am really excited about the road ahead, not only for F.R.E.A.K. but also other
green sustainable business ventures. There is so much opportunity here in Bali to
create businesses for markets that are currently not being served. Bali has seen a huge
influx of ex-pats coming here to live, either full or part-time, who are wanting to
purchase goods and services that have not been traditionally served by the local
market. In addition, there is a more affluent Balinese middle class emerging who are
also wanting to participate in the servicing and consuming of these goods and services.
I’m thrilled by how supportive everyone has been about these high quality, local, and sustainable products … and now I’m focusing on taking those very things to a larger audience so it’s easy and convenient for anyone in Bali, to be able to buy our coffee in a growing number of locations.
GS: Wow, that’s really exciting …. and we can’t thank you enough for realizing your vision here first, at Green School, where we’ve gotten to enjoy what is (sure to be) some of the very best coffee in the world!!
AY: Thank you guys too! I couldn’t have done it without Green School and I really look forward to growing together and continuing to provide folks here (and around the world) with the best service and most delicious (& sustainable) coffee on Earth!
Soulshine Festival
Green school was lucky enough to host the Soulshine Festival on a sunny weekend during this past Winter Holiday. The event was a super-fun fundraiser for the Green School’s Local Scholarship program and Bumi Sehat Birthing Centers. Over 1,500 people came to our campus to dance to amazing music, listen to inspiring speakers, and choose from a variety of engaging workshops and interactive activities. There were 20 craft vendors, offering clothing, jewelry, housewares, and healing modalities, as well as 12 informative NGO tables with helpful tips on how to get involved in caring for the environment and the local community.
A huge variety of food was available including a very successful burrito stand by Green School students, and Insook Park’s (ever so scrumptious) “Soogi Rolls” featuring kimbap (Korean sushi rolls). Michael Franti opened both days of the Festival, playing live music while yogis Les and Angela Perez led a gymnasium full of people in hour long yoga sessions, ending with impromptu dance parties each day! Many other great bands (including our very own Nasi Campur) helped raise community spirits to new heights during this super fun family event!
We just couldn’t have done it without the help of over 180 volunteers, the gifted musicians & all the energetic attendants. Last but not least we want to give huge thanks to Michael Franti, who says this is the first of many more Soulshine events to be held here at Green School in years to come! Thanks to each & every person who helped make this epic event possible!
